AVITROL Secondary Ingestion

AVITROL Website under frequently asked questions

Q. Is there a secondary poisoning problem with Avitrol?
A-No. Avitrol has no true secondary poisoning. It is possible that if an animal were to eat undigested bait from a bird's digestive tract that it might be affected. We have not seen this occur in field applications. Please see the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Secondary Hazards Report

THE PROBLEMS with AVITROL's 1973 referred to study  on their website as the authority on secondary Ingestion are:

1. The birds used in the study were already dead  from digesting AVITROL prior to being fed to the animals. The birds flesh was ground and mixed with other foods
2. The food stored in the live Pigeons CROP is not mentioned. Pigeons CROP is the large food storage organ illustrated above. AVITROL in CROP is not digested and still active poison. AVITROL admits to this problem on their website
3. Case studies are on Black Birds not Pigeons
4. No consideration to other birds taking Avitrol Poisoned corn back to their nest or dropped Avitrol while flying
5. Avitrol left or scattered at bait sites

Until we test for AVITROL during autopsies of ALL our dead pets, we will never know how much actual death AVITROL has caused...

There are CURRENT reports of autopsies from wildlife such as foxes which have tested positive for AVITROL. Owners of domestic pets such as dogs, would never request their pets to be tested for AVITROL unless prior public notice or suspicion of AVITROL use in their community... This IS the PROBLEM. The secrets... If a dog dies,, most would never think AVITROL as the source unless they were aware of use. Help us DEMAND prior notice in residential areas so we protect the ones we love from harm! SIGN OUR PETITION

  2. Pigeon Problem Poison Avitrol Pigeon Control is a very Deadly and Toxic Pigeon Problem Poison used by only a few Las Vegas, Nevada Pigeon Pest Control companies for Pigeon Control. Out of the over 300+ pest Pigeon Problem Control companies in the Las Vegas, Nevada area, only about 50 are known to use Pigeon Problem Poison Avitrol as a Pigeon bird Deterrent. OvoControl is our preferred alternative. OvoControl offers a much safer solution over time as Pigeon Birth Control

Avitrol is already restricted or banned in CA, CO, NY and UK. According to New York City's Avitrol ban, "Avitrol is too deadly and too blunt an instrument to be used in an urban setting."

Regardless of your opinion on the cruelty aspect of the Avitrol being used as pigeon poisoning for pigeon control problems in Las Vegas, Nevada, what needs to be given consideration are other very hazardous threats to our community.

Avitrol claims there are “little or no reported incidents of secondary ingestion” The problem with their statement is the communities that are being poisoned are unaware they are being subjected to the poison. Therefore when there is an instance of sickness or death, the victims would never think to consider Avitrol as the culprit.

According to PETA “Companies often tell potential customers that Avitrol and other avicides are "flock-dispersing agents" that "scare" birds away from areas where they are not wanted. They'll even tell customers that these products are humane. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Avicides like Avitrol are acutely toxic and cause birds and other animals to suffer immensely. Avitrol attacks and impairs birds' nervous systems, causing birds who ingest the poison to become disoriented, exhibit erratic flight and tremors, and suffer violent convulsions for hours before they finally succumb to the effects of the toxin.

Furthermore, "nontarget" species, such as protected songbirds, often perish from eating the tainted baits, and predators such as raptors, foxes, hawks, cats, and dogs die from secondary poisoning after feeding on the dead or dying birds.

Wildlife pathologists have demonstrated again and again that protected and endangered birds, including red-tailed hawks and peregrine falcons, die as a result of ingesting the remains of pigeons and other birds poisoned with Avitrol.

For these reasons, cities such as New York City, San Francisco, and Boulder, Colorado, have worked with PETA and other animal protection groups to restrict or prohibit the use of Avitrol and other avicides. But these cruel, indiscriminant poisons should not be on the market at all.”

  4. The black birds from the 1973 study were more than likely gutted prior to being ground up and mixed with the food for their experiments since the study references the birds "flesh." The "flesh" and/or other organs having digested AVITROL in them would not be as harmful to the subjects in the study. Furthermore, by simply cutting the heads off the birds, the crop and contents can be removed from the study results. Also, who knows what was in the contents of the other dog food that was mixed with the black birds,, the dog food could have had ingredients that neutralized the AVITROL Poisoning.. See how sneaky they are..

I would like to see a modern study with "REAL WORLD" circumstances.. Live pigeons given AVITROL and placed in the cages of test subjects with active AVITROL in the birds CROP or other organs prior to digestion. Even AVITROL knows better than that.. check out AVITROLS Poison label:
